If you let it – your brain will talk you into an early death of comfort because itās a P**SY! Motivation helps – but motivation is temporary. Here are 3 ways to trick your brain into feeling motivated so you can SMASH your goals!
Ahhhh, motivationā¦
The elusive unicorn of productivity.
Motivation is like the best, worst coach of all timeā¦
Theyāre there – sometimes – and make you feel ready to take on the worldā¦
Then, just HOURS later⦠POOF! Theyāre gone.
Like a fart in the windā¦
Why is that?
Why doesnāt motivation stay with us?
What is it about motivation that makes it so⦠temporary?
I mean, we all KNOW what motivation feels likeā¦
But why is it so difficult to maintain?
Let’s dive into the science of motivationā¦
And see if we canāt contain and corral this wild unicorn.
Clinical research shows that motivation is a complex psychological state that is influenced by both internal AND external factors…
It’s what motivates us to take action towards achieving our goals – whatever they may be.
Howeverā¦
As I said, the problem with motivation is that itās temporary.
It’s like a firework that explodes with great energy – but eventually fizzles out – leaving us feeling unmotivated and uninspired.
But why?
Well, it’s because motivation is a feelingā¦
And as we all know – feelings are unpredictable.
One moment you’re feeling hype and ready to conquer the worldā¦
The next – you’re curled up in bed, scrolling through TikTok, wondering why you even bothered to get up in the first place.
It’s like trying to hold onto a fart – it’s there one moment, and the next, it’s gone – though, in the case of a fartā¦
That may not be a bad thing – but I think you get the gist.
So, what can we do to hold onto that feeling?
The short answer?
We donāt.
You donāt hold on to feelingsā¦
What you hold onto is discipline and routine.
These are the unsung heroes of productivity.
While motivation can be great for getting started – it’s obviously not reliable in the long term.
Discipline and routine, though? Theyāre like those reliable friends who always show up when they say they will.
They don’t rely on your mood or feelings to get things done, they just do it.
But, let’s be realā¦
Sometimes we need a little extra shove.
But our brain is smartā¦
It knows that it just has to outlast that spark of motivation so it can just lay on the couch and eat chips while binging Ice Road Truckers or some other mindless show.
So, sometimes youāve got to TRICK your brain into feeling motivated.
Now, it aināt easyā¦
But it CAN be done.
And there are 3 ways to trick your brain into feeling motivated – even when itās not.
Visualizationā¦
Visualization is a powerful tool.
Research shows that if you can create a mental image of yourself achieving your goalsā¦
Itās much easier to do so.
Itās amazing what we can do – once we understand that something is possible.
Nobody thought a backflip on a motocross bike was possible – till somebody did it.
Then, everybody was doing themā¦
Then it became TWO backflips.
Now, itās THREE!
Visualization is the key to understanding that something is possibleā¦
Because when you visualize yourself doing something – your brain reacts as if you’re ACTUALLY doing it.
This can help you FEEL more motivated than you actually are – so if you can spend a few minutes each day (routine and discipline) to visualizeā¦
Youāll be able to take action.
Have you ever heard of the Pomodoro Technique?
Odds are – you havenātā¦
So, for those of us that have never heard of it – the Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that involves working in short, focused bursts followed by short breaks.
By breaking your work into manageable chunksā¦
You can trick your mind into thinking the task is more achievable.
Itās like breaking a long journey up into shorter legsā¦
Youāll still get to your destination – it just takes a little more time.
And as we all know – the trip going somewhere always seems to be a MUCH shorter journey than the trip coming back homeā¦
The excitement helps propel you forward.
The same with the Pomodoro Techniqueā¦
Breaking your goals up into smaller goals – gives you little āwinsā – and those little wins can help you feel more motivated.
Want to feel motivated?
Find a like minded soul to accompany you on your journey!
Weāre not going to get weird and ask you to find an āaccountability buddyā…
Those are for nerds and soccer moms.
Butā¦
It would be beneficial to find someone who you can lean on when youāre not feeling it.
This is ESPECIALLY helpful when theyāre on a similar journey as you.
When you know you have someone to lean on – and that someone is also counting on you – it can help you feel more motivated to get things done.
Just donāt put ALL of your eggs into that basketā¦
People are people – theyāll let you down sometimes.
The idea here is to NOT let your brain revert to its natural stateā¦
Because if you let it – itāll want you to find comfort at all costs.
THIS. IS. BAD.
Because comfort KILLSā¦
Iām convinced that inactivity is the #1 killer of people – as evidenced by our seniors.
The older we get – the less we want to moveā¦
The less we move – the weaker we get.
Donāt let your brain do that to youā¦
Keep movingā¦
Stay disciplined.
Show your brain whoās bossā¦
āYou have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.ā – Marcus Aurelius
